چکیده

Althoughgeneral anesthetics areused for approximately 21millionpatients per year in the United States,1 the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which anesthetics produce loss of waking consciousness are poorly understood. The complexity of consciousness and relatively imprecise clinical signs that are used to evaluate the depth of anesthesia are significant limitations for the study of consciousness. Recent advances in sleep neurobiology continue to enhance the understanding of different physiological traits that define altered states of consciousness. The original hypothesis2 that neural networks that evolved to generate sleep are preferentially modulated by anesthetic drugs has been supported by multiple lines of evidence.3–9 These data demonstrate that sleep neurobiology can contribute to understanding the mechanisms by which anesthetics cause loss of consciousness. The goal of this chapter is to selectively review the neurobiology of sleep and wakefulness in relation to anesthesia-induced loss of consciousness.

Sleep, anesthesiology, and the neurobiology of arousal state control.

Sleep, like breathing, is a biologic rhythm that is actively generated by the brain. Neuronal networks that have evolved to regulate naturally occurring sleep preferentially modulate traits that define states of sedation and anesthesia. Sleep is temporally organized into distinct stages that are characterized by a unique constellation of physiologic and behavioral traits. Sleep and anesthetic s...

Neuroscience Reviews: Sleep-Wake Cycles

Sleep is a ubiquitous physiological process generated by the brain of vertebrate and invertebrate species. The widespread phenomenon of sleep suggests a dynamic process of brain activity that has evolved to have a functional relationship to metabolism, reproduction and/or survival; a phenomenon that is clearly species-and age-specific. In this brief review, we discussed the neurobiology of slee...

Cinnamaldehyde Antagonizes REM Sleep Reduction Induced by Immobilization Stress in Rats

Background and purpose: Sleep and stress are linked in a bidirectional manner. Immobilization stress is a simple model that could be used easily in animal studies for understanding the neurobiology of stress-sleep relationship. Cinnamaldehyde as a herbal medicine with antioxidant activities could be investigated in modulating sleep-stress interaction. Materials and methods: In the present stud...

Cognitive Impairments of Sleep-Deprived Ovariectomized (OVX) Female Rats by Voluntary Exercise

Introduction: Previous studies demonstrated that forced and voluntary exercise had ameliorative effects on behavioral tasks followed by Sleep Deprivation (SD) in intact female rats. The main goal of this research was evaluating the impact of voluntary exercise on cognitive functions while SD and ovariectomization is induced in female wistar rats. Methods: The rats were anesthesized combining d...

Evaluation of Pain Tolerance Threshold Following Anti TNF-α after Induction REM Sleep Deprivation in a Male Wistar Rat Model (In press)

Background and Aim: Tumor Necrose Factor-alpha (TNF-α) changes by REM sleep deprivation. Some believe that TNF-α is a biomarker in the deprivation of REM sleep. The patients with insomnia could be better after using Anti TNF-α or Infliximab (IFX), on the other hand, IFX effects on Patient Tolerance Threshold (PTT). Trying to manage the hospital inpatients’ pain is one of the common aims special...
